The second half of 2020 has started in a very interesting way as Denis Villeneuve is ready to give tuff competition to Christopher Nolan's Tenet with Dune.
This time sci-fi movies will clash. 2020 started with the world closing down due to pandemic lockdown. But that didn’t stop fans from speculating about this year’s biggest sci-fi release Tenet by Christopher Nolan. Finally, now that fans’ wait is over and Nolan has captured 70% the US and global box office collection with over $152 million already, the next in line is Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel. The movie is set to release Pre-Christmas on December 18 this year.
Christopher Nolan vs Denis Villeneuve
As Nolan is known for his non-linear storytelling style, Tenet is an original script written by him. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve is monetizing on the already well-loved Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune with a multi-star cast, mindboggling VFX, and blockbuster cinematography. Now the question is which sci-fi will come out as the winner of 2020?
Star-studded Cast
Dune and Tenet both are Hollywood's biggest 2020 releases. While Tenet comes from the Christopher Nolan brand, star cast like John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Debicki, and a hefty budget of $225 million, Dune is a whole different ball game. Denis Villeneuve is ready to give Christopher Nolan a run for the money with his star-studded cast that consists of big names like Oscar Isaac, Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Stellan Skarsgård.
What do fans want?
While 2020 is film critics’ wet dream, fans are clearly divided. According to one fan on Reddit, “My prediction is that Dune will be a repeat of the last Blade Runner: an amazing film that will sweep awards, but still fly under the radar due to it's a very niche IP, and most of the audience doesn't give a shit about sci-fi that isn't Marvel, Star Wars or Star Trek. While, Tenet, on the other hand, will likely be more of a traditional spy thriller/action movie, and probably do better for it.” Meanwhile, another fan is vouching for Dune. Here’s why: “I wanna say tenet, but Dune star power is bigger, and don't forget the Dune cult, there are fans that are crazy about this universe, and have been begging for a movie for a long time.”
